Korea in the 1930s, during Japanese colonial rule: the young pickpocket Sook-hee is smuggled into the estate of the rich heiress Lady Hideko as a maid. Her mission: to deceive Lady Hideko and hand her over to a swindler who wants to marry her and seize her fortune. But while Sook-hee plays her role, feelings develop between her and Hideko that throw all the plans into disarray.

Park Chan-wook directs a masterfully multi-layered story of deception, desire and liberation that is visually opulent, narratively refined and at the same time deeply sensual. The Handmaiden interweaves thriller, romantic drama and social criticism to create an atmospheric cinematic experience full of twists and turns.
