With Digital by Nature, the Kunsthalle München is presenting Miguel Chevalier's largest solo exhibition in Europe to date. Since the 1980s, the artist has been exploring the computer as a creative medium and using new technologies - including artificial intelligence (AI). His work is also in constant dialog with the history of art and culture. Even if it is rooted in the digital, the sensory experience in real space remains an indispensable component of Miguel Chevalier's work.
The exhibition brings together around 120 works from all of the artist's creative phases, including several works created especially for the presentation at the Kunsthalle München. On display are sculptures and drawings realized with the help of 3D printing and robotics, as well as videos and installations. In these generative spatial experiences, algorithms continuously create new images that visitors can interact with through their movements.
A particular highlight is In Vitro Pixel Flowers: here, adults and children have the opportunity to experiment online and on site with virtual flowers, which then blossom in a digital greenhouse in the exhibition space. The show is complemented by a selection of natural history objects - from complex crystals to images of underwater creatures. The result is an experience that is not only multi-layered, but also physical and emotional - an invitation to observe, participate and marvel.
