The graphic novel Zeter und Mordio by Jens Cornils tells the story of a Hamburg criminal case from 1687, which Glückel von Hameln - the first known German-Jewish writer - passed down in her memoirs. Created in close collaboration with the "Geschichtomat" educational project of the Institute for the History of German Jews, the work combines historical research with graphic interpretation.
Based on this project, the lecture provides an insight into the creation of a historical comic at the interface of visual design, narrative condensation and source-based work. The focus is on the collaboration with historians and archives, the handling of historical materials and the question of why the medium of comics offers particular potential to tell history in an accessible and at the same time multi-layered way.
