DHRUPAD (IN 1983 / 74 min.) by Mani Kaul
Dhrupad is the oldest art song style of Hindustani music. In his beguiling and elegiac film, Mani Kaul follows the traces of this music, whose roots he locates in the cycles of nature. Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar (who plays the rudra vina) and Zia Mohiyuddin Dagar,
the vocalist, are filmed making music, but are also embedded in their social and geographical environment. In this way, Kaul finds spatial, temporal and cinematic equivalents of the musical effect and does not forget to point out how this craft is threatened by a changing culture.
