A controversial lawyer and writer - Heinrich Hannover
Reading on the 100th birthday
About the play
As a lawyer - especially as a criminal defense lawyer and as an advocate for conscientious objectors - Heinrich Hannover stood up for the rights of his clients in an exemplary manner. He uncovered the political orientation of the judiciary and its tendency to persecute communists and opponents of remilitarization as well as to suppress student protests and documented this in his book "Die Republik vor Gericht" (The Republic in Court).
His professional work and his political commitment were two inextricably linked aspects of his life. As an active citizen, Heinrich Hannover gave speeches at Easter marches and events and wrote controversial articles against militarism well into old age.
His 100th birthday on 31.10. 2025 is an occasion for the organizers to commemorate his work in a reading with selected texts, which is more relevant than ever in times of warmongering, armament and crimes against humanity. Heinrich Hannover's work also includes his popular children's books, from which readings will also be given.
Bernhard Docke and Volkert Ohm, former colleagues of Heinrich Hannover, will be present at the premiere of the reading.
