In a world that oscillates between progress and fragility, six artistic projects explore the multi-layered connections between humans, space and the environment. They question the role of science and technology, which on the one hand appear to be saviors, but on the other are deeply embedded in colonial and ecological structures. The invisibility of material resources behind digital innovations such as artificial intelligence is made visible, thus exposing the illusion of the immaterial. At the same time, the importance of community, memory and responsibility is reflected in the context of sustainability, for example through the perspectives of parents who look to future generations. The projects also address the fragile balance between limitation and openness, between hierarchies and encounters, be it in urban spaces, in nature or in social interaction.

Through literary images, performative scenes and visual juxtapositions, a polyphonic narrative emerges about the search for connection, meaning and responsibility in a complex world that is constantly changing. Six artists are currently part of the Junges Kolleg of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts. They combine expertise and working methods from very different disciplines, each using their own means to follow the fractures and distortions of the present - and it is precisely through this that they come together, unexpectedly but inevitably, like the cracks in a cracked mirror.
