The New Year's Day concert will take us from the past to the present and then look ahead to a future that has yet to be written. "Yesteryear" by George Crumb begins by looking back in vain and sings of transience in the ceaseless passage of time. The past and present are reflected in Claude Debussy's cello sonata: originally conceived as an homage to the masters of the French Baroque, Roland Freisitzer's orchestration brings the sonata close to a sound world that Debussy would have heard in 2019. The work "Whatever, maybe", composed especially for this concert, develops from another work by the Impressionist composer, "Children's Corner". Maruan Sakas and Maximilian Höcherl keep a watchful eye on the world and set the seeds of change to music: sometimes you sow them yourself, sometimes you merely reap their fruits. A piece about the courage to make decisions, about inspiring possibilities, sobering realities and the inspiring power of a new beginning.
