is an independent, privately run orchestra. The orchestra was founded in the 1973/74 concert season by master class students from the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts under the direction of conductor Christian Kabitz. Solo violinist Florian Sonnleitner initially became concertmaster before replacing Kabitz as musical director of the orchestra in 1979. In the years that followed, numerous members of the Bach Collegium München were given leading positions in the three major symphony orchestras of the musical metropolis of Munich, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian State Orchestra and the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra.
From Christmas onwards, the Bach Collegium München choir and orchestra will give the traditional performances of the great Bach Passions. The two performances of the Christmas Oratorio in December 2025 and the St. Matthew Passion in April 2026 were praised in the press for their "overwhelming intensity of expression on the stage of the Isarphilharmonie". Now the Bach Collegium München will be performing a festive baroque program in the Brunnenhof of the Munich Residence on 28 July 2026.
