Ever since he was captured by his political opponents, there has been no trace of Florestan. But his wife Leonore believes him to be alive. When Fidelio escapes, she signs on in the prison where she suspects Florestan to be. Her suspicions are soon confirmed as certainty, but how can he be freed? The third version of "Fidelio" was premiered in Vienna in 1814 and was written as an appeal to humanism and human dignity, against injustice and the abuse of power, very much in the spirit of the 1789 revolution.
