Samia is an enthusiastic sportswoman and lives in Mogadishu. She made it to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing from the poorest of backgrounds and against all the Islamists' misogynistic bans. Despite this success, she suffered further reprisals and death threats because she ran in public without a headscarf. In order to realize her dream of a self-determined life and an athletic career, Samia had to flee her home country and made the life-threatening journey to Europe.
She took a risky route via Sudan to Libya, from where she hoped to reach the Italian coast on a boat. On April 2, 2012, she and other refugees drowned in the Mediterranean near Malta. She is only 21 years old. The feature film "Samia" is based on the novel "Don't say you're afraid" (Guiseppe Catozella), which is based on true events. This is the touching portrait of a strong and cheerful young woman who pursues her dream against all odds: Somali track and field athlete Samia Yusuf Omar.
Using the tools of film analysis, we will approach the characters in the film, its plot and the peculiarities of cinematic storytelling and talk to the director, Yasemin Samdereli.
