"Easy Rider" (Easy Rider)
Director: Dennis Hopper; USA 1969; 95 minutes; German dubbed version; Drama
"Easy Rider" (1969), directed by Dennis Hopper, is considered a milestone of New Hollywood cinema and embodies the spirit of the late 1960s. The story follows motorcyclists Wyatt, known as "Captain America" (Peter Fonda), and Billy (Dennis Hopper), who travel from Los Angeles to New Orleans to take part in Mardi Gras after a successful drug deal. On their Harley-Davidson motorcycles, they cross the diverse landscapes of America and encounter different people and ways of life.
Along the way, they encounter a hippie commune, experience rejection by conservative small-town folk and make friends with alcoholic lawyer George Hanson (Jack Nicholson), who joins them. These encounters reflect the tensions and upheavals of the late 1960s, in particular the conflict between the desire for freedom and social intolerance.
"Easy Rider" captivates with its authentic portrayal of the counterculture of the time, supported by an iconic soundtrack featuring artists such as Steppenwolf and The Byrds. The film explores the search for freedom and identity, while at the same time shedding light on the darker side of American society. Its open ending and critical examination of the American Dream make it a timeless classic.
"New Hollywood - cinema that crosses boundaries"
The Easy Rider - Apocalypse Now - Annie Hall film series celebrates the radically innovative cinema of New Hollywood, an era that artistically redefined American film. From the counterculture rebellion on motorcycles in Easy Rider, to the existential darkness in Coppola's Apocalypse Now, to the neurotic self-reflection of Woody Allen in Annie Hall - these films boldly reflect the upheavals of their time. They transcend genre boundaries, break narrative conventions and venture a deep look into the soul of America. Together, they unfold their full power as cultural testimonies to a cinematic revolution that still resonates today.
This radical upheaval not only gave rise to a new cinematic self-image, but also to modern American independent film. Directors such as Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson and Sofia Coppola still benefit from the creative freedom that New Hollywood once fought for. Without this break with tradition, there would have been neither today's bold narrative forms nor the courageous, personal auteur cinema that is celebrated at international film festivals today. New Hollywood thus not only changed the cinema of its time, but still forms the foundation for sophisticated filmmaking and cinematic diversity today.
