Finissage Münstermann

He was a master of exaggeration and extremes, an exceptional talent as a North German sculptor and carver in the 17th century and highly esteemed by his patrons - and yet Ludwig Münstermann (around 1575-1637/38) has remained largely unknown both within art history and to a wider public.

Until November 30, 2025, the Landesmuseum Kunst & Kultur Oldenburg is dedicating a comprehensive exhibition to the master Münstermann for the first time. The exhibition at the Augusteum brings together over 35 works by Münstermann and his workshop, offering a comprehensive insight into the artist's diverse oeuvre for the first time. Secular sculptures, which were created particularly at the beginning of his artistic career, are just as much a part of the presentation as a series of religious works, many of which are still preserved today in the churches of the Oldenburg region. Finally, the exhibition is also dedicated to the reception of Münstermann's oeuvre: the figure of "Apollo" (1615/16) in Berlin's Bode Museum prompted Markus Lüpertz (*1941) to create an entire cycle of works in which he meticulously studies the expressive figure and opens up entirely new potentials in the perception of the ancient sculpture.

At the finissage of the exhibition "Münstermann" on Sunday, November 30, 2025, 11.30 a.m., there will be a discussion between Markus Lüpertz and Stefan Trinks, head of the art department of the FAZ.

The event ticket entitles the holder to visit the special exhibition "Münstermann" at the Augusteum (Elisabethstraße 1, 26135 Oldenburg).
