In the special exhibition Averted Lear, new works from the long-term project The Averted Portrait by photographer Corina Gertz meet figurines by costume designer Esther Bialas. Bialas has designed breathtaking costumes for the Düsseldorf Lear, the fascination of which Gertz has captured in seven large-format photographs.
Tension before the performance
In her latest Averted Portraits, Düsseldorf photographer Corina Gertz not only captures Esther Bialas' magnificent costumes for the current production of King Lear directed by Evgeny Titov at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus. Taken shortly before the performance, the images of tense shoulders or raised heads also allow the viewer to see how ready the actors are for their appearances on stage in the Grosses Haus and for their portrayals of Shakespeare's characters. The portraits also bear witness to the loving and masterful work of the Schauspielhaus costume department. Gertz's rigorous pictorial arrangements celebrate every detail of the costumes. These new portraits are being presented for the first time in the special exhibition.
Costumes of a trilogy
Together with director Titov and set designer Etienne Pluss, Bialas has created the costumes for the entire trilogy of Shakespeare plays, which will run from 2021 to 2025. Her costumes are not only opulent pieces of clothing between historical reference and timeless expressiveness, they also often characterize the actors' performances. For example, André Kaczmarczyk wore platform shoes as Richard III, which influenced his entire posture, and in Lear it is above all the actresses' expansive skirts that encourage new ways of playing. Materials from the work on the Shakespeare trilogy accompany Gertz's photographs and provide insights into the complex work on the productions.
