Zeresenay Mehari, Ethiopia, USA 2014, 99 min.
In 1996 Ethiopia, lawyer Meaza Ashenafi and her organization fight for the rights of women and children in her country. In doing so, she repeatedly clashes with the authorities in her country. When the lawyer hears about the terrible fate of 14-year-old Hirut, she immediately decides to take on the case. The young girl was kidnapped on her way home from school by an elderly farmer and raped in order to take her as his wife according to local tradition, the "Telefa". But the brave girl managed to escape and killed her tormentor in the process. Hirut now faces the death penalty and is arrested. In order to save the girl's life, Meaza must take up the almost hopeless fight against centuries-old traditions and patriarchal beliefs.
