Everyone knows stories of romantic love: as butterflies in the stomach and deep intimate feelings, as passionate devotion, drama, struggle or heartache. Love appears everywhere. In the form of hearts and candles and ritualized sayings.
In FRUITCAKE, Güldeste Mamac, Fatih Peker and Giuseppina Tragni ask what love actually is in our society. How can it be that it is "different for everyone"? We can't remember ever asking our parents about it. We also don't remember ever talking about it at school. There is no common definition to guide us. And somehow we all know what we're talking about when it comes to love, don't we?
The three-person team interweaves music and lyrics in Fruitcake. The artists work their way through common concepts of romantic love, asking questions and sharing discomfort. They allow for doubts and contradictions, reveal private matters, touch and negotiate this universal topic with the audience, which offers a breeding ground for empathy and closeness, especially in times of political extremes. The examination of romantic love does not exclude themes such as self-love, friendship and love of family. On the contrary - it includes all of these in order to understand and explore the truths and lies of love.
