New York during the Second World War: twelve-year-old Jewish boy Alan likes to play with his friends in his free time, but then he is asked to look after the new neighbor girl Naomi, who has fled France with her mother to escape the Nazis. Naomi is in shock, and even in her new home she doesn't speak to anyone.
Alan is initially reluctant to visit Naomi regularly. His friends call her 'crazy Ida' and Alan fears for his reputation if he is seen with this 'madwoman'. Nevertheless, he accepts his new task - albeit reluctantly. At some point he finds his old ventriloquist's dummy 'Charly' and takes it to Naomi. And lo and behold - after a while, Naomi takes her doll and lets it talk to Charly. Naomi opens up more and more over the following weeks, and Alan now really enjoys visiting her. Then Naomi is supposed to go back to school and Alan will accompany her, but let the others think what they want. But on the way to school, a fight breaks out between Alan and another boy, and Naomi's terrible past catches up with her...
