GLOBAL POTT - Musik im Salon: Trio Hanna Schörken

On October 2, 2025, the musicians Yoon Sun Choi (New York City), Duy Luong (Cologne) and Hanna Schörken (Essen) will meet in this constellation for the first time at Kunsthaus Essen and play two sets of improvised music. Two female singers, who sing together in the trio KYN from NYC, meet a bassist. An evening full of exciting sounds, between jazz, folk and new music.

Yoon Sun Choi, born in South Korea and raised in Canada, is a New York-based improvising singer and pianist who uses her vocal skills effortlessly from sonorous, haunting melodies to deep, resonant cries. In her twenty-five year career, Yoon has made a significant contribution to the music scene, collaborating with esteemed artists such as Mark Dresser, Darius Jones, Jacob Sacks, Thomas Morgan and Kenny Wheeler, and performing at prestigious venues such as the Blue Note, Birdland and Carnegie Hall.

Born and raised in Hanoi, Duy Luong grew up in a musical family. After studying classical guitar, he discovered the bass - an instrument that would shape his musical path. In 2014, he began his jazz studies at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen with Robert Landfermann and Stefan Rademacher and developed into a versatile musician on double bass and electric bass. His musical work spans numerous projects and genres, including jazz, electronic and experimental music. He has played with ensembles such as Rønee, ZOUY, the Henning Neidhardt Trio, Luong/Neubauer/Liebhaber, LARIZA and Open Sound Control. He also took part in concert tours and album productions as part of the improviser in residence program of the Moers Festival 2021, together with Kevin Shea and Matt Mottel.

Hanna Schörken, born and raised in Duisburg, is a singer in the field of free improvised music, jazz and electronic music. Schörken initially studied English and French literature at the University of Bonn. From 2008 to 2014, she studied jazz singing and musicology at the Cologne University of Music and Dance and the ArtEZ Conservatorium in the Netherlands, among others. In 2022 she was nominated for the German Record Critics' Award with her trio Ampair:e and for the Kathrin Prize of the Jazzinstitut Darmstadt. CD releases on various labels.

Together with Yoon Sun Choi, she is active in the trio KYN, a free improvising vocal trio that came together in New York City in 2022. In 2025, they released their first album together on the US label ears&eyes Records.

The Global Pott brings the world to Kunsthaus Essen: Every first Thursday of the month, international sound cultures meet experimental formats, improvised sound spaces and unusual ensemble line-ups. The new concert series presents musicians from the Ruhr region and beyond, whose roots and sounds are as diverse as the region itself.
