Godspeed You! Black Emperor released a series of albums between 1997 and 2002 that redefined what protest music could mean. Long-form instrumental chamber rock compositions of immense feeling and power serve as soundtracks to late capitalist alienation and resistance. The band's first four releases - notably F#A#∞ (1997) and Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven (2000) - are considered classics of the era and the genre.

Godspeed's legendary live performances, featuring multiple 16mm projectors projecting a collage of overlapping analog film loops and reels - as well as the unmistakable iconography, imagery and feel of the band's album art and physical LP packaging - define the group's unique aesthetic, ethos and mythos.

GY!BE has released two official band photos in its 25 years of existence (the second, left, a 2010 reissue of the first from 1997) and given half a dozen written interviews in the same period, which were answered by all of them together. The band never had a website or social media accounts. They never made a video. Few rock bands in the 21st century have tried so consistently to let their work speak for itself and follow simple rules to minimize participation in the cult of personality, notoriety, and constant accessibility and presence.

After a seven-year hiatus from 2003, Godspeed returned to the stage in December 2010 (as curators of the British festival All Tomorrow's Parties). The post-reunion period has now lasted over a decade, marked by hundreds of sold-out live shows and four further albums, all of which have been well received.
