Gott des Gemetzels von Yasmina Reza

In the organizer's words:

Two 11-year-old boys fight in the playground, one hits the other with a stick, the other loses two incisors. Among civilized people, like the parents, they talk things through together.

But more archaic impulses suddenly break out. Who was the guilty party between the two boys? And so it goes from blow to blow, from teasing to verbal battles, from verbal abuse to violence. The coffee party degenerates into a battle in the hall.

With diabolical, vitriol-soaked humor and merciless accuracy, Yasmina Reza's play skewers modern bourgeois society, which is torn between enlightened, sensible do-gooderism and all-too-human, selfish competition. As obliging and soft as we may pretend to be, in the end one of us has the upper hand: the God of Carnage.
