Graphic Novel auf die Bühne: Don Quijote

In the organizer's words:

Graphic Novel on Stage combines literature, music and art and brings well-known classics to a wide audience. At the Schauspielhaus, we are showing the Brizzi brothers' illustrations of Cervantes' "Don Quixote", the most famous classic of Spanish literature, in a large format.

The Brizzi brothers' adaptation shows us a man trapped in a world of books and fantasies - trivial romances of chivalry - to such an extent that he can no longer distinguish reality from fiction. Cervantes makes fun of this in his novel and creates the bizarre character of Alonso Quijano. But what if Don Quixote were alive today? Instead of immersing himself in knightly romances, he would lose himself in the endless worlds of social media. In this modern version, Don Quixote is not a knight, but an algorithmic knight trapped in the echo chambers of the internet. His "knightly romances" are now TikTok videos, Telegram channels and YouTube algorithms that show him a distorted world. And that's what makes the Brizzi brothers' graphic novel so interesting: it shows us that Don Quixote's battle against the windmills is more relevant today than ever.

The evening will be accompanied by music. Members of the Treppenhausorchester will play Telemann's "Suite Burlesque de Quixote", Vivaldi's "Bassoon Concerto in E minor" and Jean Francaix's "Divertissement". The bassoon, played by Peter Amann, is at the heart of the musical program. The deep woodwind instrument with double reed is characterized by its warm, versatile sound. It has a wide range and a complex key mechanism. The tone and shape of the instrument are slightly whimsical, like the hero from Cervantes' novel, and thus embodies Don Quixote particularly well. Albrecht Selge curates the evening and reads from Cervantes' novel.

In cooperation with the BBBank.
