Halle Handlich | 75 Jahre Landesmünzkabinett Sachsen-Anhalt

Halle (Saale) has been a globally important center of medallic art for over 100 years. Gustav Weidanz, Gerhard Lichtenfeld and Bernd Göbel taught the handy relief as teachers at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle and inspired it time and again with their own works. Works by them and many other sculptors from the rich collection of the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale) convey a multifaceted and surprising picture of the city on the Saale, its historical personalities, its landmarks and its institutions. They are small monuments and at the same time intimate witnesses of the attitude to life.
Even today, the medal is above all an artistic medium in which sculptors tell stories in a sculptural and scenic way. Several artists have been invited to create new works. They will explore the possibilities of the medal in terms of artistic form and message. They will focus on the charming, the imperfect and, of course, the beauty of the city on the Saale.
Founded in 1950, the Saxony-Anhalt State Coin Cabinet in the Moritzburg Art Museum in Halle (Saale) is one of the twenty largest universal numismatic institutes in Germany with its rich collection. It is the youngest German coin cabinet, for which modern and contemporary medallic art has been a conceptual focus since its foundation, and which has been continuously cultivated at the Kunstmuseum Moritzburg Halle (Saale) for 125 years.
The exhibition honors the 75th anniversary of the founding of this important collection.
