On a desperate search in a foreign country

Alexander Rupflin's debut novel "Protokoll eines Verschwindens" is a kind of docu-crime story and is based on a true crime. The author, a crime reporter for "ZEIT" and the magazine "ZEIT Verbrechen", tells the tragic story of Brazilian Gabriel. Hamburg in the fall of 2019: young doctor Isabella convinces her brother from the Rio de Janeiro favela where they both grew up to join her in Germany. At first, everything goes according to plan, Gabriel finds a job and falls in love with his colleague. But then he disappears without a trace. Isabella begins a desperate search in a country that is becoming increasingly foreign to her. At the same time, the nurse Fabio tries to continue his inconspicuous life until he can no longer ignore what lies in his guest room: a corpse that has been decomposing for months.
