Freedom of the press is a cornerstone of our free society. It is a prerequisite for different points of view to be heard, for people to be able to form their own opinions and for those in power to be controlled. Democracy needs free media and diverse reporting. However, freedom of the press and media diversity are in danger - not only in many countries around the world, but also here in Germany. Protecting them concerns us all.

Hamburg Press Freedom Week will once again take place from November 2 to 8, 2025 . This year's focus is on activities that promote news and media literacy. After all, misinformation, manipulated content and AI-generated images are making the work of many media professionals more difficult. It is also becoming increasingly difficult for citizens to distinguish serious news from fake news and deliberate disinformation. A strong democracy needs well-informed citizens. How can you recognize manipulated videos or photos? How can I trace sources and distinguish verified information and objective facts from propaganda? And what does all this mean for democracy?

The action week, which is taking place for the third time on the initiative of the Körber Foundation and ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS , is all about finding answers to these questions. More than 40 partners - including Norddeutscher Rundfunk (NDR Info) and STRÖER Media as founding partners - are taking part in the action week, which offers a broad, free program for all age groups at many locations throughout the Hamburg metropolitan region.

It is aimed at schoolchildren and young people, students and older people, people with and without previous knowledge, as well as specialist journalists and experts.
