They are two works that could not be more different: When Karl Amadeus Hartmann observed prisoners from the Dachau concentration camp being herded through the street in front of his house on April 27, 1945, he composed his oppressive piano sonata, which bears that memorable date as its title. Igor Levit confronts this musical indictment with a monumental work of variations which, as he says, has managed to arouse his curiosity again and again like no other work to date: Beethoven's 'Diabelli Variations'. Based on Diabelli's unspectacular waltz, the theme Beethoven called 'Schusterfleck', the composer piles up a universe of musical characters in '33 Veränderungen' that is second to none.
