Ashok Oswald has had a pool built after amassing a considerable fortune at the age of 35. He swims his lengths like every morning, but this morning is special: three strangers turn up and force him to hand over the manuscript that was entrusted to him many years ago. Ashok hands it over, but what is so significant about this book that these people seem willing to do anything? To find out, Ashok gives up his old life.

Heinrich Steinfest was born in Australia, grew up in Vienna and now lives near Heidelberg. He became known for his award-winning crime novels - and many of his novels and stories have a special tone: dream and reality intertwine, poetic digressions meet irony and linguistic wit. Steinfest was last awarded the Leo Perutz Prize in 2024.
