LISTENING TO HELENENSTRASSE - AN EVENING ABOUT PROSTITUTION, POLITICS AND PERSPECTIVES

Helenenstrasse, a brothel street with a long history, is located in the middle of Bremen. How does the city, how does the district deal with the conflicting interests - from the expansion of prostitution to redesignation as a residential street?
This 45-minute radio feature by Deutschlandfunk sheds light on a street in a state of emergency.
Those responsible from politics and the police have their say, as do professionals involved in the sex trade and neighbors. They talk about obstacles and positive experiences during the research. And about an unwilling protagonist.
There are also the property owners of Helenenstraße, who play no role in the public debate, but provide a surprise in this program.

Journalist Gaby Mayr has been researching Helenenstrasse for over a year. On this evening, she will provide information about the making of the program and unexpected findings. The discussion will also provide an opportunity to talk about the future of Helenenstrasse and possible courses of action.
Gaby Mayr has worked extensively on Africa as a freelance journalist and is interested in issues of power in its various forms. She has received several journalism awards.
