In 2025, the Kunstmuseum Magdeburg celebrates its 50th anniversary: half a century of artistic debate, social reflection and cultural change. Since its foundation, the museum has been dedicated to contemporary art - then and now. From the state-controlled art policy of the GDR to the spirit of optimism of the democracy movement in 1989 and the international opening of recent decades, the museum tells the story of continuous change.
This development is also reflected in the collection: many works were created in the field of tension of social upheaval. They bear witness to closeness and distance, to demarcation and community as something fragile and constantly challenged. Under the title Challenged Community, the anniversary exhibition brings together works of art that make idiosyncrasy, contradiction and social polyphony visible. Central works from the collection enter into a dialog with contemporary positions, some of which have been newly created for this exhibition.
In this interplay, they explore the complexity of community and encourage reflection on historical and contemporary forms of togetherness. Community can never be taken for granted and must always be renegotiated. The artworks make ambivalences visible, question familiar patterns of thought and explore the boundaries between individual and collective memory.
Across the entire exhibition space of the museum, HERAUSGEFORDERTE GEMEINSCHAFT presents a multi-layered panorama of painting, photography, video works, installations, graphics and sculpture. The exhibition spans five decades: from artistic practices of the 20th century to the social upheavals after 1989 and today's forms of coexistence. The focus is on questions of community and togetherness - and the role that each individual plays in this.
