We can all sense that Germany is currently in a state of upheaval. The changing world is also leading to profound changes here. What does this mean for our self-image and what challenges do we face? How can we remain relevant in terms of domestic and foreign policy? Germany's new role will largely depend on whether we succeed in using our economic, political and cultural power to keep Europe together. Not only are reforms urgently needed for this, but Germany and the EU must show themselves to be resilient against Russia, self-confident in their dealings with China and - if necessary - independent of the USA, explains Münkler in his new book Macht im Umbruch (2025).

Herfried Münkler is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at Humboldt University in Berlin and one of Germany's most renowned political scientists. He has received numerous awards.
