Venice in winter - a city full of fog, enchanted palazzi and mysterious alleyways. Here begins a fairytale adventure that blurs reality and fantasy.
Siblings Prosper and Bo have fled Hamburg to escape their aunt, who wants to keep them apart. Their journey takes them to Venice - a city they only know from the stories of their deceased mother. Lonely and without money, they struggle along until they are taken in by a gang of children.
The gang lives in hiding in an abandoned movie theater and keeps its head above water with petty theft. They are led by a mysterious boy who calls himself "Lord of the Thieves". Not only does he appear to be brave and clever, he also seems to be guarding a big secret. One day, when he accepts an unusual assignment - the theft of a wooden grand piano from an old house - the adventure takes a magical turn.
The seemingly harmless assignment leads the children on the trail of a mystical carousel that has the power to make people older or younger - a tempting promise, but also a great danger. As the children become more and more entangled in the mystery surrounding the client, the "Conte", they have to realize that courage, trust and friendship are often the only compass when everything else starts to falter.
