In the organizer's words:

"White Suitcases of Remembrance" is a project to remember Jewish neighbors in Schwabing. A lecture on the art installation in the Schwabing City Library by Wolfram P. Kastner Institute for Art and Research.

In memory of women, men and children who lived as neighbors in Schwabing - until they were excluded, persecuted, robbed, expelled or murdered by the Nazis and their helpers from 1933 onwards because of their Jewish ancestry.

On November 20, 1941 alone, 996 Munich Jews were deported to Kaunas/Lithuania and murdered five days later. Before being deported to their deaths, their lives were limited to the contents of a suitcase. All that remained of many of them was an entry in the population register, a passport photo and the cynical official note "deported to unknown".
