A flock of farmyard inhabitants accompany the naive and lovable Gnomy on his journey from false duck to elegant swan. Danger lurks around every corner, mostly in the form of the hungry cat, but help comes from unusual quarters and Gnomy manages to get by thanks to his simple good nature.
Spring has also arrived at the poultry farm. This year there is an unusually large egg in the nest of Erwin Drake and mother duck Ida. Out hatches an ugly animal that has little in common with its siblings and also makes a strange HONK! sound instead of the expected "quack". Ida looks after the ugly duckling called Gnomy like her own children and is delighted that it can swim particularly well. All the other animals on the farm, including her own family, make fun of him.
The tomcat invites Gnomy to "dinner". He narrowly manages to escape and meets the gander Greyfoot, who imagines he has had a glorious military career. Far from home, Gnomy finds temporary shelter with the chickens Stummel and Prinzesschen. It is not until the following spring that the search for his "mother", with the help of the beautiful swan girl Sissi, is successful - just in time for his triumphant return as a swan that is no longer ugly at all.
