A lecture recital. Part 2: Vive la France!
The composer Frédéric Chopin lived almost half of his life in France - many years at his side: the writer George Sand, who moved through the salons in men's clothing, cultivated passionate relationships with women and turned gender roles upside down with her novels. Gender non-conformity was alive before the word even existed.
This second part of the lecture recital focuses on Chopin's Parisian years - and the question of how much queerness there is in the story of his relationship with George Sand. Was she a muse, lover, accomplice? Or simply a woman who refused to submit to the male-dominated rules of her time?
Düsseldorf song pianist and music teacher Sophie Sczepanek sheds light on George Sand's radical androgyny, her bisexual affairs and the subversive power of her literature - from feminist utopias to drag moments in the 19th century. This will be accompanied by piano works from the Romantic period that oscillate between melancholy and revolt.
A discussion concert about artistic self-empowerment - of women and men who moved beyond traditional role models in the 19th century. And about the question of what history sounds like when we are prepared to listen to it without preconceived judgments.
Lecture recital - never heard of it? A lecture recital is a special concert form that combines music and context. The performance is supplemented by short, concise moderations or scholarly and artistic explanations - for example on composers, historical backgrounds, interpretative approaches or social references, so that you can immerse yourself even more deeply in the music and the time.
