Ian Fisher emigrated from his home state of Missouri at the age of 21 to bumble around Europe for 15 years. In his music, he blends his rural upbringing in the US Midwest with a dark sophistication developed during his time abroad. Simple but emotionally complex, he has the intense power of an early Jeff Tweedy, the sentimentality of Townes Van Zandt and the political views of Billy Bragg. He has written nearly two thousand songs while touring extensively throughout Europe, Africa and North America, and his numerous albums have earned him praise in media outlets such as Rolling Stone, which calls his music "a world traveler's perspective on American folk-rock." When he's not on tour, he can be found in his studio in Vienna or on his family farm in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.
Strange Country from Hamburg have come a long way since their more acoustic and traditional early days in 2008. A few of the older country-oriented numbers can still be found in the live set, but the focus has long been on wild, virtuoso improvisations. Influences? Traces of Bill Callahan, Nick Cave, the late Bob Dylan, the spirit of the US jam bands and, time and again, the total spontaneity of jazz.
