by Theresia Walser // Directed by Ella Haid-Schmallenberg
Three dictators' wives meet for a press conference on the occasion of the planned filming of their lives. Although the former First Ladies are no longer in office, they are all still reminiscing about their glamorous days at the center of power and attention. Mrs. Margot's and Mrs. Imelda's husbands died an unpeaceful death and Mrs. Leila's husband is currently standing trial in a "grotesque Dutch court" for crimes against humanity. In order to overcome the language and understanding barriers between the rulers, the translator Gottfried tries increasingly desperately to mediate between them and in doing so stirs up the political upheavals even further. Meanwhile, they all agree that their biographies are far too overwhelming to fit into a banal movie; only opera could be the appropriate medium...
Director Ella Haid-Schmallenberg brings Theresia Walser's acerbic comedy about political self-dramatization, authoritarian systems and public role models to the stage with sharp-witted humour and great enthusiasm.
