Girls and Gods
Can feminism and religion coexist? The film "Girls and Gods" is a clenched feminist fist against the misogyny of monotheistic religions - be it Catholicism, Evangelical or Orthodox Christianity, Judaism or Islam.Protagonist, author and FEMEN co-founder Inna Shevchenko interviews Nadezhda Tolokonnikova from Pussy Riot, Maryam Namazie, founder of the Council of Ex-Muslims, and Masih Alinejad, who initiated the "My Stealthy Freedom" and "White Wednesday" campaigns in Iran, among others. Alinejad asks: "How do you recognize a theocracy first and foremost? By the women. The religious dictatorship writes its ideology on women's bodies."
Shevchenko systematically gets to the bottom of the question of why so many women still cling to their religion despite obvious devaluation and disregard. To this end, she engages in dialog with female Catholic priests (yes, they really do exist), with Seyran Ateş, the feminist imam, with Avigayil Halpern, a feminist rabbi, and with Khola Maryam Hübsch, the Islamic apologist. The film provides a highly aesthetic, concentrated overview of feminist reactions to monotheistic religion. From "Vive la blasphemy!" to "Love is halal" and "Make love, not sharia!".
