"Asking Twice", the CD release concert!

The fact that the Italian guitarist Ilario Maggi and the pianist, composer, percussionist and multiple competition winner Joachim Raffel, who has had a lasting influence on the Osnabrück and German jazz scene since the 1990s, have come together seems like a stroke of luck. Another stroke of luck ("That makes 'Asking Twice' a great listening pleasure", Ralf Döring / NOZ from 20.11.2025) is that Maggi and Raffel have now released their first album together. For Joachim Raffel, it is now his sixteenth. And last but not least, the highly remarkable stroke of luck that shooting star Ilario Maggi - who has moved to Osnabrück for love - has recently become the most exciting newcomer to the jazz scene in the Hasestadt, lending it additional international flair.
What both musicians have in common is that their teachers include some very big names. Ilario Maggi was a master student of Rocco Zifarelli, Ennio Morricone's guitarist of many years. Joachim Raffel attended the 1993-95 workshop of the legendary American valve trombonist, big band composer and arranger Bob Brookmeyer at the Cologne University of Music. And so the two quickly realized that their music together is a jazz that loves and celebrates melody and an often almost cinematic imagery, that swings and grooves immensely and that draws its great richness from a lively combination of traditional styles with exciting modern harmonies.
