Inspiration SWANA

In the organizer's words:

The collection presentation "Inspiration SWANA" marks the conclusion of the redesign of the museum's non-European collections. The reorientation of the content takes a critical look at the museum's colonial heritage and goes hand in hand with the renaming of the "Islamic Art Collection" as the "SWANA Collection". SWANA is the abbreviation for the region of Southwest Asia and North Africa. With the renaming, the MK&G is the first museum in the world to make a groundbreaking change of perspective towards a contemporary name for the collection. Historical and contemporary works are presented in regular rotation in a lively dialog and developed further together with partners from the SWANA region and its diaspora. On display are over 200 objects - tiles, ceramic vessels, metalwork, glass, textiles and calligraphy. Contemporary highlights include the newly acquired work "Untitled Convertible" (2016) by the internationally renowned Iranian artist Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian (1922-2019) and an interactive position on the Arabic alphabet by the Hamburg fashion label Habibi.

The new concept for the SWANA collection is made possible by the following donors: Agnes Gräfe Stiftung, Herbert-Pumplün-Stiftung, Justus Brinckmann Gesellschaft, Peter und Dietlinde Bischoff Stiftung, ZEIT STIFTUNG BUCERIUS.
