Question: "Mr. Holländer, how do you create a good chanson?"
Answer: "Well, you take a bag of Parisian air, a pinch of Berlin wit, an original idea (but only one), make up a little story with three or four verses and make sure that the last verse ends with the right punch line."
After Hitler's seizure of power in 1933, the flourishing careers of Friedrich Holländer, Werner Richard Heymann and many other composers in Germany came to an abrupt end. With emigration and expulsion, the following years meant the search for a new home, for a continuation of their artistic work.
Accompanied by pianist Thomas Frerichs, singer Jutta Gerling-Haist and actress Verena Plangger musically trace the artists' paths. They bring the time of the crazy 1920s and the period of National Socialism with flight and expulsion to life. Peppered with virtuoso piano improvisations - sometimes witty, sometimes funny, sometimes thoughtful, sometimes melancholy.
