At the end of 2021, Jackson Ryan boarded a gigantic icebreaker in Australia and traveled to Antarctica. For 50 days, he crossed the Southern Ocean and the continent and reported on the biggest problems facing Antarctica - and the scientists working to save it. This lecture is about penguins and seals. But above all, it's about science journalism and how it can be improved by researchers and journalists working together to inform, engage and educate the public.

Jackson Ryan is an award-winning science journalist from Adelaide, Australia. He has written for the New York Times, the Guardian and Nature since 2024. His work has been recognized with the Eureka Prize for Science Journalism, among others. In 2025, Jackson Ryan is a journalist in residence at HITS, the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies.
