The life of a 14-year-old Norwegian boy changes abruptly in 1961. Jan Garbarek hears John Coltrane on the radio and begs his parents to give him a saxophone. Since then, he has been fascinated by wind instruments - and rhythms from different countries. Indian, Arabic, African, Brazilian and Japanese music all inspired Jan Garbarek and provided the special shades in his brilliant saxophone sound. Whether his legendary times in the avant-garde, for ECM, with Keith Jarrett or the Hilliard Ensembe: everyone recognizes this sound immediately!
The master in his original voice: "The human voice is my ideal" - and there is hardly a saxophonist who has come as close to this goal as the likeable musician from the far north.
It is the contrast between the songlike, poetic, simple and the intensity of free improvisation with other musicians that defines Jan Garbarek's art. The artists accompanying him again tonight each contribute to this in their own way. Rainer Brüninghaus' calm genius on the piano. The unobtrusive Brazilian Yuri Daniel on bass. And last but not least, Trilok Gurtu, the wild drum magician from India on percussion. Jan Garbarek: a musical circumnavigator who catches whatever the winds blow his way. Anyone who listens to him can feel what touches him and what gives him the breath that brings the sounds to us.

"Jan Garbarek is back on the European stage. His floating sound will not fade away yet - that's a good thing!" (BR-Klassik)
"A brilliant, even furious performance in the Elbphilharmonie in late fall 2024 - by four masters of their craft!" (Hamburger Abendblatt)
"The central figure of European jazz reactivates the beauty of this music in the long sold-out Wiener Konzerthaus - brilliant, unleashed!" (Der Standard)
