A symbolic start. A grand return: Jan Garbarek opens Jazzfest Bonn 2026, and with him, jazz makes its way into the newly renovated Beethovenhalle. The Norwegian saxophonist has been regarded as the icon of the Nordic sound for decades. Whether as an ECM flagship, with Keith Jarrett or the Hilliard Ensemble - his brilliant, ascetic tone has shaped generations and has long since made history itself. "The human voice is my ideal," says Garbarek, and indeed his saxophone seems to sing, to breathe, to speak. Together with his fellow musicians, Garbarek combines influences from Indian, Brazilian and African rhythms to create music of poetic simplicity and improvisational intensity - a magnificent start to the new festival season.
