Jessica Nupen, Reparation Nation

In the organizer's words:

Welcome to a new state, REPARATION NATION!

Through contemporary and hip-hop dance, opera, visual art, live soundscapes, electronic polyrhythmic beats, interactive installations and a fascinating simultaneity, a dance theater production unfolds that places the African narrative at its center.

In a panorama of video landscapes from Senegal, Namibia, South Africa and Germany, an absurdly comical and at the same time deeply touching structure about property, origin and identity emerges.

What rules apply in this new state? Which objects have the greatest value here: the everyday, the newly created or the rediscovered? What ghosts are hiding in empty display cases? The ensemble moves through the empty spaces left behind by looted cultural assets and traces the entanglements of loss, possession and power that have developed over the centuries from an African perspective. A spiritual space opens up in which the unseen, the silenced and the forgotten are recognized - and in which new bonds of healing and awakening can be forged.

"Reparation Nation" is a production by and with BiPoC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) and POAD (People of African Descent) artists from Senegal, Namibia, Cameroon, South Africa, Ghana, Sri Lanka and the African diaspora in Hamburg. Together with a trumpet-playing composer from Berlin and a South African singer from Lübeck, the ensemble creates a vision of the future that challenges European perceptions of African stories, while at the same time understanding the theater itself as a place of refuge for healing, a ritual of remembrance and a seedbed of transformation.
