Katze Greeven: Die Entfesselung des Sebastian

In the organizer's words:

About the event:

"What's more boring than flag waving? Watching the flag being waved!"
(Schützen wisdom)

Katze Greeven grew up with the Schützenfest on the Lower Rhine and watched the flag waving at the Sunday parade year after year. A typical flag-waving sequence for the region is "The Fettering and Unfettering of St. Sebastian", in which a flag is waved in horizontal circles from head to toe around the body. Each circle describes an area as flat as the Lower Rhine itself.

In Katze's village, all the flag wavers were men. Now the artist wants to become a flag waver herself and has her brother teach her the sequence so that she can take it to Bremen. Together with musician Cordula Heins and a brass player, Katze redesigns the choreography of the (dis)bondage and lets Sebastian speak.
How malleable are military, Christian and patriarchal roots? Does a saint have the potential for dragking? And what lies beyond boredom?
In a dialog between flags, singing and wind instruments, a ritual between entertainment show and urban customs is created on a meadow on the dyke behind the Schwankhalle. The performance questions the role of community in cities and the survival of cultural heritage. In circle after circle, the repetition becomes a symbol for the breaking up of traditions.

About the artists:

Katze Greeven (all pronouns) comes from Grietherbusch. In her performative works, the artist uses dance, language and humor to challenge existing power structures and traditions. The focus is on the body and its stories as a place for vulnerability and change. Katze has been working with the performance collective b/w*itch since 2019. After completing her Master's degree in Performance Studies at the University of Hamburg, she completed her basic dance studies at bewegungs-art in Freiburg. She is currently a scholarship holder of the "übenübenüben³" scholarship of the Montag Stiftung Kunst und Gesellschaft in Mönchengladbach. Katze recently produced "lost particles - das Darmstück" at Schwankhalle together with Kattú Mitxelena Newiger and rapper Finna.
