What does real rest still feel like today - and who can afford it? From 11 July 2025, Villa Merkel, Gallery of the City of Esslingen, is dedicating the exhibition "(K)eine Pause - Ausruhen im digitalen Zeitalter" to one of the most pressing issues of our time: the loss of moments of rest in an accelerated, digitalized world. The group exhibition brings together eleven international artistic positions that deal with questions of deceleration, social inequality and digital routines. With contributions by Caline Aoun, Patrizio Di Massimo, Jeppe Hein, Judith Hopf, Moritz Jekat, Anna Jermolaewa, Thomas Liu Le Lann, Martin Parr, Sophie Utikal, Bill Viola and Wiktoria, a powerful parcours between socio-critical discourse and tangible mindfulness is created.

Two conceptual approaches are at the heart of the exhibition: on the one hand, digital technologies such as health apps, social media and constant accessibility have become permanent companions that demand our attention around the clock. On the other hand, it shows that resting is not a universally available commodity. Rather, it is a social privilege that depends on financial resources, social security and access to protected spaces. The exhibition makes it clear that taking a break is not just an individual act of self-care, but also a socio-political attitude.
