On the Silver Globe is a monumental and mythical work of Polish science fiction cinema that defies easy categorization. Director Andrzej Żuławski is known for his emotional intensity, philosophical boldness and visual experimentation.
The film has a unique history: it was conceived as a comprehensive allegory of the spiritual failure of humanity. It was censored under the regime of the time and remained unfinished for almost a decade. In the end, Żuławski created a hybrid form that is haunting and visionary.
In 2015, the film was named the best non-Hollywood science fiction film of all time by the website Taste of Cinema, surpassing even Fritz Lang's Metropolis and Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker. The fact that it was almost forgotten makes its rediscovery all the more significant.
