K&Q Vol.10 • Dokumentarfilm: “Black Water Green Gold“

As part of the Kino & Quatschen series, Kulturhaus Schwanen will be showing the award-winning documentary "Black Water Green Gold" by Axel Javier Sulzbacher on Thursday, May 21, 2026 at 8 pm. The evening invites film enthusiasts and filmmakers to get into conversation with each other - about cinema, responsibility and the stories behind the images.

The film takes us to Lake Patzcuaro in central Mexico, where an indigenous community is fighting for the survival of its habitat. At the center are three people: Carlos, Santiago and Tona - representing the reality, the resistance and the culture of the Purépecha. They report on the decline of water, forest fires and the constant insecurity in a region where ecological and social crises coincide. Sulzbacher's calm camera captures not only the disappearance of a landscape, but also the strength of a community that refuses to give up.

"Black Water Green Gold" (2023) is a co-production of Tzintzuni Studio, Übergrafisch and Ivory Tower and was awarded the Camgaroo Award 2024 (Best Documentary) and the Beyond Film Festival Award 2024 (Best Utopian Film), among others. The film shows a world in which climate change, the economy and dignity are inextricably linked.

And it poses the question: What is all this really worth to us?

After the screening, the room opens up for discussion: the audience, filmmakers and interested parties exchange impressions and discuss what local action has to do with global responsibility.
