This is how Ayşe Deniz Birdal describes herself and her relationship to her music:
"My goal with my music is to develop an interdisciplinary artist identity, which in my case includes cello playing, composition, singing and poetry.
I am a cellist, I compose and sing and often incorporate my own poems into my compositions. The style of my compositions can be described as cross-genre. They combine elements of contemporary classical music, improvisation and Turkish folk music with experimental, spiritual and poetic elements.
With the artistic identity I am working on developing, I want to build a bridge between genres and cultures, express my identity as a human being and as a woman who migrated from Turkey via Europe to pursue an artistic career, and narrate my life experience and the diversity of cultures.
Last year, with the support of the Amsterdam Cello Biennale and TRPTK Records, I released my first solo album with a program of my own compositions and as a cellist/singer interpreting my own works."
"My artistic identity has grown from the constant movement between countries, languages and stories.
This nomadism forms the core of my work and the concept of "Troubadouritz", which I developed together with the composer Riccardo Perugini.
When "Troubadouritz", Riccardo Perugini's work for singing cellists, met me in 2022, he was looking for a singing cellist. Our collaboration proved to be a perfect match right from the start. "Troubadouritz" became the name of the program describing our compositions by a singing cellist.
Over time, it evolved into a program that was performed in many countries, in different places and during my travels in a nomadic lifestyle. It became a wave of art under whose umbrella I create my music and shape my life.
"Troubadouritz" is a time-traveling female troubadour - a reinterpreted concept emerging from the traditions of medieval troubadours and expressed through contemporary music and poetry. She is queer, neurodivergent and migrant, a nomad who wanders through time and geography."
