Art on the scaffolding

In spring, the Kunstmuseum presented Elisa Lohmüller and Daniel von Alkier, the winners of the Woodcut Prize 2025. The Kunstmuseum and its circle of friends are thus specifically promoting young artists, as both artists are currently studying at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design. The exhibition ended in May; after the end of the exhibition period, it can be viewed digitally in a 360° tour(to the 360° tour "). A catalog pamphlet was published to accompany the exhibition and is available free of charge at the museum information desk.

For the first time, the prize was awarded in full to two artists. With the active support of the Kunstmuseum and its circle of friends, the two newcomers have created convincing new works for the Reutlingen exhibition with a direct reference to the location. In the run-up to the exhibition, the prizewinner Daniel von Alkier had already developed a façade artwork on the scaffolding of the historic Spendhaus façade facing Lederstrasse.

Thanks to the resounding success of an appeal for donations during the exhibition and finissage and the generous top-up from the Freundeskreis, it has now become possible to realize Daniel von Alkier's project. The art museum is proud and extremely grateful for the broad civic commitment that supports and accompanies its work. At an event on 26 June, the Kunstmuseum unveiled the fabric tarpaulin with a sixteen-metre-high reproduction of Daniel von Alkier's linoprint collage Bastionstor from 2025. Together with the Freundeskreis, the Kunstmuseum invited people to get together and exchange ideas.

Daniel von Alkier develops his pictorial worlds in linoprint collage technique on cotton fabric by repeatedly overprinting, rotating, combining and superimposing. His printing technique combines the classic linocut relief printing process with experimental monotype. In his motifs, he combines personal, architectural and figurative motifs from everyday life with his search for identity as a queer artist. Pictorial elements such as the Tübingen Gate, Stuttgart's Weissenhof estate or the Bietigheim-Bissingen viaduct are incorporated into this visual diary. Finally, he uses his templates stamped onto fabric like building blocks, with which he transforms the effect of spaces with ease. With the "world's largest woodcut in Reutlingen", he superimposes the structure of the entire museum façade into a monumental, soaring portal situation.
