About the exhibition DEMARKATION: Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Verdun - photographic works in the timeless now by Stephan Kaluza
With DEMARKATION, the Bilker Bunker is showing predominantly large-format photographic works by the artist Stephan Kaluza. At first glance, they appear to be one thing: unagitatedly beautiful. But with further information - the reference to the place where the photographs were taken - and the former bunker as the exhibition venue, their ambiguity becomes apparent. What is ultimately illustrated is society's approach to time, memory and forgetting.
The photographs show places of human catastrophe: Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Verdun, among others. At first glance, the landscapes appear peaceful and insignificant. But the titles reveal the most difficult history.
This is precisely where the exhibition comes in: It addresses the relationship between image, meaning and memory. How do we look back today when places no longer bear any visible traces? And what future do we want to shape from this?
About Museum Of No Art:
Schleuse Zwei becomes a metaphysical space of the subconscious through artist Mona Steinwidder's music project - Museum Of No Art.
Since the release of her first album in 2020, which appeared on the Canadian label Séance Centre, Steinwidder has played concerts in many different places - often in special contexts. For example, at the Minimal Music Festival in Amsterdam, where she played a "wake-up concert" for a sleeping audience. The artist has also created project-related works that always border on the visual arts, such as "site-specific music" for the contemporary art space Het Hem (also in Amsterdam) and the soundtrack to the poems of the artist Mitko Mitkov.
On her second album "A Serpent Called Emit", released in 2024 on the tape label Cosima Pitz, her focus is on clarinet and other woodwind instruments. Over a period of two years, she has repeatedly developed new approaches to these instruments. Minimalism and complexity revolve organically around each other and connections are created between the poles. The music takes us to surreal and unknown places - this time to the shadow of a floating stone.
In summer 2025, their latest EP "Traveling at the Speed of Time: With Museum Of No Art" was released on the Dispari label. You can experience this special blend of music and art at the Schleuse!
