LA TRAVIATA

Free as a bird, the Parisian courtesan Violetta Valéry has so far pursued her business, getting involved with this man today and that man tomorrow. In Alfredo Germont, she has now found the man she wants to settle down with. But Alfredo comes from a prestigious family and Violetta's highly dubious past clings to her. It is therefore not surprising that Alfredo's father is worried about his family's reputation and thus - without meaning to - plunges the young lovers into deep misfortune ...

With "La traviata", Giuseppe Verdi and his librettist Francesco Maria Piave wrote one of the most touching Italian operas based on Alexandre Dumas' drama "La Dame aux camélias" ("The Lady of the Camellias"), which initially failed at its premiere in 1853. As the title suggests, it placed a "woman who has gone astray" at the center of the action - an unheard-of idea at the time! Today, "La traviata" is one of the most frequently performed operas of all time, full of catchy tunes and with showpiece roles for exquisite singers.
